TRANSIT LIMITS BETWEEN MARKET AREAS
The transit limit between market zones is the maximum capacity that can be exchanged in the energy and dispatching services markets between two neighboring market zones, in compliance with the security limits of the National Electricity System (SEN). Market zones are geographical areas that have different energy prices and are separated by capacity constraints in the transmission network. Every year Terna publishes a document indicating the maximum limits for energy transfer between the various market zones in Italy. These limits serve as a reference for the market and operators to understand how much energy can be exchanged between the different zones. Starting from 2021, the limits indicated in the Terna document must be considered purely indicative, because the actual exchange capacity is now calculated on a daily and intraday basis (i.e. in real time or almost) through more dynamic processes managed by the Regional Coordination Centers (RCC).
